Editorial policy

How pages are sourced, reviewed and corrected.

What we publish

General reference information about pregnancy and infant health, written for people without a medical background. We do not offer personal medical advice, diagnose anything, or recommend a treatment for an individual.

Sourcing

Pages cite public health bodies, professional organisations and peer reviewed literature — the NHS, the Mayo Clinic, the American Pregnancy Association, MedlinePlus and PubMed among them. External links open in a new tab and are marked as external.

When something goes out of date

Medical guidance changes, and an archive written over several years will contain pages that have been overtaken. Our approach is to be visible about it rather than silent:

  • Superseded guidance stays visible, with a notice. When a page rests on a classification or recommendation that has since been withdrawn, we place a notice at the top of that page naming what changed and linking to the current source. We do not silently edit the text to make an old page look current, because that hides the fact that anyone who read it earlier was told something different.
  • Pages about withdrawn products are removed. If a page recommends something no longer on the market, leaving it up with a note is not enough. It is removed, and its address redirects to the section that now covers the subject.
  • We do not write medical content to fill a gap quickly. Where this site has no page on a subject it should cover, the gap is listed openly — see the table of unwritten pages on the medications hub — rather than filled with text assembled at speed.

Review status

Every medication page shows a review status. “Cites retired FDA letter category” means the page still refers to the A/B/C/D/X system the FDA withdrew in 2015 and has not yet been rewritten. “Not yet reviewed” means exactly that. These describe the state of our page, not the safety of the medicine.

Corrections

If you find something on this site that is wrong, out of date or unclear, please tell us. Corrections to anything with a bearing on health are prioritised over everything else we are doing.
